Hong Kong stocks close well down

Hong Kong stocks finished with losses on Tuesday, in line with a sell-off across Asia as traders fret over fresh virus spikes around the world that have led governments to impose fresh containment measures.

The Hang Seng Index fell 0.9 percent, or 274 points, to 28,994.

Turnover was HK$146.1 billion.

Oil prices dived. PetroChina tumbled more than 4 percent and CNOOC lost 2.8 percent.

Among the other market heavyweights, Tencent shed 0.8 percent and HSBC was down 1.4 percent.

Across the border, benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.9 percent, or 33 points, to 3,573, while the Shenzhen Composite Index sank 0.9 percent, or 22 points, to 2,441.(Additional reporting by AFP)
